DAY # 199 -- Launch: T-10 Days!
UPDATE: Friday, 23-Dec-2005 11:26 PM
Well, another late day. Most people around the world went home early for their Christmas holiday, but I am here. I am here because our site was down today. Our site was down for 8 hours today --again. This was the 5th time that it was down.
I then talked to the president (CEO) of Plexum software for nearly 2 hours now, and I asked all the questions that came to mind. The bottom line is that Plexum software says that they are NOT responsible for the fact that the server we use was down for 25% of the month of December. So far.
They are NOT responsible. It's my poor decision. There are a few problems with the statement.
I went back to my notes that day when the decision was made. I first contacted our hosting provider, and found out that PHP 5.0 could not be installed.
Then I had to look for such a host with that setup. I could not find one, as PHP 5.0 was new and hosting companies wanted to wait before installing it.
I wanted setup quickly and didn't have the time to go hunting for hosting with PHP 5.0. I then talked about the problem with Plexum and was led to their own hosting which I found out was "optimized" for their software. This I found very comforting --their server that I would be using was *optimized* for the very software that I was going to run and that meant that I could sleep better at night.
Well, that was three months ago. Things were fine for October and November. The problems started December 3rd and since then the server has been down for 5 occasions and nearly 40 hours.
Being down for 40 hours in a month is like a hart pacemaker blinking about every few minutes. The outcome is death.
I am thankful to still be here. And I am doing everything to make sure that we are using new software as soon as possible. The problem is that the new software has to be setup on a new office network and I've got to also setup a duplicate at my home office to allow for testing. I also backup everything at home, so there is a lot more to switching than just installing the software.
The other part is a $10,000 price tag. I don't mind that part, as long as it works. The problem now is that non working software is worthless. I don't care what excuse the developer comes up with.
Anyway, I have saved all the transcripts from all the chat conversations and over the coming days I hope to review what was said before the sale of the current software and what happened after the purchase. If the difference in service is ... Well, I thought about it for a bit, and what the hell am I saying. This is not what I have experienced with 11 years of hosting.
At this time everything I have worked for has been put in jeopardy. That is the bottom line.
I've got to approach the situation with the same energy and determination that I have used to make sure I got to this point. I will do so --otherwise this effort, the effort that I have put forth for decades is marginalized. Furthermore, the current effort is not ALL ABOUT ME --already several hundred Affiliates from worldwide have trusted my work. I have to make sure that this situation is just a minor 'glitch' on the way to the top of the mountain.
It will be done. Sam out.
