DAY # 519: FREE vs. PAID SOFTWARE --Which cost less?

UPDATE:
Wednesday, 13-Dec-2006 10:08 PM

Over the weekend I had a discussion with a guest about software --the type that is FREE (linux and such) and paid --mostly software running on Windows.

Lately, lot of the "FREE" stuff has gotten rather expensive. In fact, we now pay more for the Linux setup than for Windows Server.

Go figure.

-- My TEST BLOG --

The problem with a lot of free software that I find on the Internet is that it ends up costing a lot of time to figure out how it works. That is fine if one is in college learning about IT work. However, in the real world where time is money, free software can get *very* expensive when, for example, my time is put into the equation.

I am having to make that consideration now working with WORDPRESS. I may opt to finding a commercial package that can handle pictures for the CMS system as all the software "pluggins" that I've found for WORDPRESS have not worked or even installed.

However, I often see sites running images with WORDPRESS, so that means that I have not put enough time into the mess.

Anyway, with a lot of learning to do on Windows Server, a CISCO router that I just got and a bunch of other stuff, the picture may have to wait a bit.

So, the answer to my question: Which costs less? Free or Commercial? In the long run, I am afraid that commercial products that charge a fair price are the cheaper way to go. There are very rare exceptions, but the problem is this: After the initial development, free software get rather complicated, and no "one" programmer can keep up with the development. The only way to get a product improved, proper customer support, etc. done is by charging for the product.

When that is done, new talent to make an even better product will join the effort, and better services can be provided as in support and security for the customer.

WHAT'S LEFT to DO?

I still have several writing tasks to complete, but at this point Maxsimo.NET is "ready to roll!". I just updated the Maxsimo.NET Representative Manual. It's fully updated to take care of the new rep management software.

Now it's a matter of small, continuous daily improvements --everywhere. As I said, when that is done about 250 TIMES a YEAR, the combined effect is incredible.

Now to the end of a long day. Carpe Diem, Sam.
