UPDATE: Wednesday, 01-Mar-2006 12:16 PM
I had to cut the writing that I had originally for today, after making a lot of "look 'n feel" changes to the site. The entire layout is new and now takes advantage of the best results that can be expected from Google's AdWords.
Here are the changes that I made:
1> At the very top I added the "Press Here to Bookmark" feature so that it was easy to see and was moved away from the rights side.
2> I widened the right side so that I could put two columns of Google AdSense's 300 x 280 format ads. Now as many as 8 ads can show up at this space.
3> Then I cleaned up the left navigation area so that it's one continuous line of links and ends with the bookmark tab.
4> I made the area right above the AdSence ads, in the middle top, where I put the day an area where I could also put a title for each update.
5> I think now the depth of the left and right sides of the pages are even or nearly even depending on the amount of writing that is done.
MOST IMPORTANT REASON for the CHANGES:
I came to a conclusion from all of my reading and testing that putting a skyscraper banner with ads on the right had the lowest response rate of ads. According to research by an ebook writer that was the outcome.
I didn't need to read that to know what was happening --I could see that from all the page views and ads displayed, I was getting a very dismal click through rate. What was the solution? After reading the book, within 8 hours I had made the changes. What I was doing was like keeping 3 lanes open with a sign saying "FREE" at the top of a toll road with 4 lanes. I had 3 out of 4 potential ad clickers not doing so because of my setup.
I hope that is no longer the case. I hope that every visitor will depart this site not by closing a page, but by clicking on an ad and exiting.
THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON:
When I learned that I can make the site resolve a lot better to the ads I made the change immediately. I will now go back and change all the pages as I made other changes to the template. At the same time i can also check all the links and external links that have given me all the problems in the past.
Ok, now back to my normal, daily updates. Back with that tomorrow. Carpe Diem, Sam out.
