DAY # 269 : Often the Field of Career Matters Very Little, While the Pursuit of Goals and Excellence Are Everything
UPDATE:
Friday, 17-Mar-2006 11:47 PM
It's Friday night and I am watching one of my all time favorite detective movies --L.A. Confidential. I think what I like about the movie is the cast and their intensity. I think that is true with all the movies that I like --at times even with a poor script, when the acting shines, it's impressive and I get absorbed into each scene. Time is of no consequence.
I think with just about everything that I do, I also hope to one day achieve that degree of excellence. Of course, using actors to talk about excellence might almost bring me to the flirt with an oxymoron, but the issue is inching to excellence.
In the past I have talked about shipbuilders, sports stars, business successes --all I have felt have achieved that nirvana. But, what does it take to get there? Time? Persistence? Dedication?
What will it take for me to get there?
What does it take for me to walk the steps of success?
What does it take to reach excellence in my lifetime?

I got into this discussion, not knowing where I was going, but I wanted to discuss it because at times I "go off subject" and have a lot of problems concentrating on the goals that I have. It has been a constant problem. The issue was there with work, and the solution was to shut down everything except the program that I was using to write this. Of course, the TV was off. I was running iTUNES(TM) for a while, but that also got old after a while. I learned from the blog that deep within I had the intensity that it took to go day after day to work on what needed to work on.
Then from time to time, I could not do anything. I felt frozen. Later I found out why. The problem has been that I am very good at small projects. However, when a project is very large and spans weeks or even months, I break down. The solution is also one that I have discussed here at time. The solution is to break down each task to several smaller 'mini-project' and work on each one.
I am just about to complete such a project --it is the operations manual for Maxsimo.NET. At this time it spans 20 chapters and over 120 pages. It has been an extremely lot of work. However, by breaking it down to the 20 or so chapters and then working on each one, day by day, I have completed the first version of it. I think now there will be about 9 more versions of it before all the projects have matured and I can call it a "work done". That will take the rest of the year.
CONCLUDING the EXCELLENCE DISCUSSION
But, what does it take to get there? Time? Persistence? Dedication? As I have mentioned earlier, one of the items above is my enemy holding me back. Perhaps, 'enemy' is too harsh of a word. Perhaps, the better term is 'my challenge'. Looking at the above items, I would venture that the challenge I have is "time" --not running out of time, but working on doing things on time. One of my persistent problems has been taking on too many things at one time. Then I get bogged down, stretched... stressed. It has been a long time growing with me.
What I need to do is focus on the tasks at hand and get them finished. Then I need to work with more staff to get the next generation of items done while I focus on sales. That is the key to success in the end --sales. To my knowledge I don't recall too many people talking about it because nobody likes to really do it. Nobody seems to like sales, but in the end a sale *must* take place or nothing works. Advertising does not work, enterprises do not work, networks do not work. Someone needs to use them. Someone needs to sell it first. I have not been focused on that part.
Once again, I don't want to just ramble on but the conclusion of this discussion is that I need to get the current set of tasks done, following the focused plan that I have exercised many times. Then I need to get back to the sales chair and get the work done. As with many other aspects I don't see any problems with getting this done.
One thing that I can say from this experience, after 269 DAYS of it is that once I set my mind to it, I can get it done. That I will do now...
It's still Friday. I've completed watching L. A. Confidential and all the commercials. During that time I also finished 3 blog updates. Sorry to jump ahead of the game, but now I can rest this weekend, and get things done at a slower pace. Nice for a change. Carpe Diem, Sam.
