but for this trip we now have a new tool --dual screens for the kids to watch DVD. Another test I hope will be a success.

It is always a guarantee that when the work is just about complete a vacation is also planned. Originally, I had decided for May because I thought all the programming updates would be done by then, but it never makes it on time. I should have known that.

Anyway, now to a good vacation story...

The year was 1999, and I went to the Phillipines to learn diving. When the vacation was booked, I said to my wife to make sure that there is Internet access at the hotel we were staying at for the week. She called back and said they were not sure, but they had a web site. That's of course no guarantee of anything. So, I asked her to confirm that they had a "fax line", knowing that if there was a fax machine, I could connect the laptop to it and check/send my emails. The answer had come back "Yes, Ma'am" as they say, "we have a fax line".

Several weeks later we flew to a southern island in the Phillipines, and then took a jeep for an hour to get to a small boat that took us to the final "small island" with the hotel. I think the Philippines is made up of around 7,000+ islands, so, this is the norm. At the hotel check in, I asked where and how I could send a fax, to which I was told the following:

Sir, just write your message down on this paper. I will give it to the boat captain, who will give it to the Jeep driver, who will give it to the Pilot, who will then take it to our main office in Manilla and send your fax.

At that point I closed my laptop and enjoyed a week-long, "no-laptop" or for that matter no news weeklong holiday!

These days things are a bit different. It's hard to find a place where I cannot get connected. Actually, I don't mind. I love to get my thoughts here. Carpe Diem. Sam's on vacation!
