DAY # 323 : MOBILE COMPUTING CHECKLIST

UPDATE:
Tuesday, 16-May-2006 3:27 PM

Since I am on a short holiday, and logging on to check email, I thought I'd make a quck checklist of things to keep in mind on my next trip. This is a checklist for updating my laptop.

The item on the list is the type of plug to pack depending on the European or USA standard. The easiest remedy to this is to carry the US plug, with an European adoptor. However, if one is in Europe, stick to the Euro plug. When in Asia, who knows what to expect --carry both.

Legal Note: I am not a Financial Advisor, Lawyer or Accountant. If you are going to do this on your own seek professional help when you need it. Through this site, my BLOG, I am simply sharing my thoughts, goals, and showing what I am doing. Collectively "INFORMATION" that you can read to follow along. Otherwise, go here...

GOOD IDEAS to KEEP FILES OPTIMIZED
in a LOPTOP, BEFORE TRAVEL

I keep all my working files in various "MY DOCUMENTS" folders. Each site that I work on and each project that I work on has a folder, as well as it's image folders. There is also a central MY PHOTO folder. All these are backed up several times with one set not getting more than a week old. I have a RAID setup on my main workstation, but since the glitch (probably a virus) that hit last month, that is not working, so it's back to the old method of making sure all the files are backed up manually.

Anyway, the easiest thing to do is back up the following folders:

1> My documents.

2> All the bookmarks

3> My password folder that I maintain using ROBOFORMS. Please note that if you'd like to get roboforms, there is a 20% discount when you apply the "MAXSIMO" discount code at the time of check out online. You can get this wonderful program at http://www.roboforms.com >>

4> At the traveling end, try not to get behind a firewall that blocks everything and proxy servers. If you are using a browser such as OPERA, as I am on my laptop, make sure that you also have the latest IE installed. Many ISP's that sell services "by the day or week" while traveling may have you setup an account that requires pop up's and IE.

5> When you are setting up your documents and files for "the road" don't wait 'til the last minute. You can bet there will be a "network glitch" or something priventing you from transfering the files at the last minute. Do it the day before and make sure everything copied over.

6> Checking e-mail: You'll need to most likely use a web browser based email checking tool, like HORDE. Make sure to have the URL bookmarked and the password and username ready. Usually, the username is SOMEONE as in someone@yourdomain.you and the password is whatever you wrote down the last time you had to do this. B>) But, do you know it now? Well, in that case it may be too easy to guess and you need to get a real password.

7> Do a trial run from your "home/office" location, and see what you need! Some surprises may turn up...

Ok, I've actually got to finish an item that I didn't get to before leaving and to that I must pay attention now. Got to go! Sam out. Carpe Diem.
