As you may have read in my conversations, I have found a lot of similarities in cultures that value quality and success in their populations. About this time last year I was in Sri Lanka, shaking my head at everything I saw.
In the end, the question was: IF this is the way things are done in the normal, day to day life of the Sri Lankans, HOW could I expect them to produce the quality programming, timely updates and unending updates that our network needed?
Well, just several weeks after my return, I stopped working with the team. Enough was enough.
Now the work environment is much better.
Anyway, the point is that --or the lesson learned was that I should not expect the perfect development that I was seeking from people who do *not* know how to "keep their own back yards".
As I am walking around here, I am amazed at the quality of everything from the brick sidewalks to the windows on the building. I remember visiting Austria about 8 years ago on a ski trip and I immediately noticed the quality of the windows the the hotel we were staying. They were the best windows that I had seen. Then each year I kept looking at the windows. I think I have been there a total of 3 times in 8 years during the winter, and the hotel's windows look like they are brand new.
So, the question again is this: Why is this population capable of producing such fine products while the folks at the Sri Lankan level are struggling along?
Well, I spent a lot of time thinking about this issue, and the conclusion that I come up with is this: In Austria life depends on the quality of the dwelling. Build a poor home, and the winter snow can "bring down the house". Or if one does not plan for the winter, as they have for many generations, then one does not see the following spring. In the case of the Sri Lankans, the situation is much too easy. Just about everything is around and not much planning is needed. Just get enough food for a day or too and one is set. As for a dwelling, not much is needed.
My last note today is about the cleanliness of the place. I think this place is the cleanest place (apart from Disney World) that I have visited. Tomorrow, I'll take more notes on these ideas and as Arnold would say "I'll be back!" {B>)
Carpe Diem, Sam out.
