search engines --mainly the big three 'engines' --Google, MSN and Yahoo. I suppose there are thousands of "niche" and language specific search engines out there, but at this point I don't have time to execute a plan to reach those and getting traffic from the "big 3" are more than enough to execute my long term plan.
SO, WHAT DO SEARCH ENGINES LOOK for WHEN THEY LIST YOU in the FIRST PAGE of their SEARCH for a GIVEN KEY WORD or PHRASE?
Here are some hints from a 2005 patent application filed by Google.
Domain Name Registration - Yes, Google cares how OLD your domain is and furthermore, they also care for how long you have registered it. The domains that are registered for just a year might be involved in spamming, and other marketing activities that Google does not care about.
However, a site with a 5 year or 10 year registration has much more value. The minimum in this case should be 2 years. Lastly, Google is looking at the length of registration knowing that someone with a 10 year registration is taking their online business much more seriously. Several of the Maxsimo.NET sites are registered for 10 years. For the lesson, I'll also make sure to use domains that have extended registrations.
Google will also manage a list of spammers who keep creating new domain names that they intend only for marketing purposes. And to flood their system with more and more marketing sites.
Google will track the number of times a URL is selected from its search results. Thus, the titles and key words are vital. And at the same time the search engine will look at how long you spend at the resulting page. That means if you think the page that you have landed on is worthless and close it quickly, then the search engine will know that was not worth your time.
Other items that search engines will look at include how active your site stays. How often updates are done to blogs and forums. If not, then the site will rank low. Making timely and frequent content changes are then vital. There are sites that present historical information that don't need to get updated. Of course, there's no penalty when such sites update much less often.
Query Analysis - FRESH is BEST: A search for "Super Bowl Winner " will
produce different results than it did last year, even if a
page on last year's winner has more links pointing to it. By watching an increase or decrease in search trends, each engine can present higher rankings for sites that present new trends.
Google says that links to pages from other
sites tend to have differing anchor text if they are
obtained naturally. Artificial linking campaigns tend to
produce anchor text that is the same.
OTHER IMPORTANCE of ANCHOR TEXT:
- Text that changes when the page the link is on changes will be counted as being more relevant.
- Text that changes with time may indicate a change in
topic on the site.
- Text that is no longer relevant to the site linked to
may be discounted.
My discussion about building organic search engine traffic will continue for many more days this month.
Carpe Diem, Sam.
