DAY # 339 : Setting Up to Build Traffic With Search Engines

UPDATE:
Tuesday, 06-Jun-2006 10:06 PM

This is a continuation of the discussion that I started with on DAY #337 about building search engine traffic by looking at what the search engines are looking for.

The conversation ended with a discussion about "anchor text" and I'll today continue where I'd left off.

Another dream...

Another dream

Legal Note: I am not a Financial Advisor, Lawyer or Accountant. If you are going to do this on your own seek professional help when you need it. Through this site, my BLOG, I am simply sharing my thoughts, goals, and showing what I am doing. Collectively "INFORMATION" that you can read to follow along. Otherwise, go here...

SO, WHAT DO SEARCH ENGINES LOOK for WHEN THEY LIST YOU in the FIRST PAGE of their SEARCH for a GIVEN KEY WORD or PHRASE?

Continued from Day#337...

One of the more interesting facts learned from Google's patent application is that they will look at the behavior of the traffic going to a given page after a search. Using the various tools like the tool bar, cookies and other behavior tracking software it would not be difficult at all for them to track every move!

In the previous comments I mentioned that it will not be possible to create sites and then forget them. In this case the traffic is also monitored for feedback to what is a good and relevant site and what is not. The bottom line is that you'll need to keep "fresh" content that grows by the day to keep people and machines interested in what is said.

Another revelation is the logic behind linking, where other sites are linking back to your site for various reasons. According to Google such links are not created overnight nor do they occur in masses. I beg to differ. I think there are sites that gain links in masses after they are featured in various news reports. But, that type of link building is perhaps 'tuned out' by search engines when webmasters try to "fake" the links. What I am talking about is the way links are built by exchanging links with other sites. Again, this is trying to cheat the system, and in the long run that always fails.

I have now devised such a system that avoids all these 'pit falls' and allows our Members to tell their story by publishing their PRESS RELEASE, ARTICLE and/or FULL PAGE AD. I will in the next day or two present a page in this blog to help test by publishing YOUR OWN content. I'll post the directions on how to do that on a page in the next day or two! HINT: Keep reading and you'll see where/how to send your content to me to publish it.

I am testing it this month with the hope to deliver it by the end of June. The objective is to create such links from relevant sites. I have it already working for myself, but the challenge now is to have the system working for all the members.

The system that is getting setup will run from my home LINUX box, which runs 24/7 hosting a test server that I maintain. During the day the server acts as the media hub, file server and general back up device to the network of pc's, linux box, print server and wife's mac. But during the night it does not do anything at all. I am going to put this system to work from home, where the bandwidth is just sitting there. I have a connection that's 10MB down and 2MB up --that is fast and now put to good use. Am I getting off topic? Sorry, I've love to talk tech...

Anyway, the long term publication system, which I hope will update millions of articles every week, will then run from my home network. That will spare the office bandwidth and keep something for me to play and learn with. I've had to do this since I don't want to mess with operational work areas. I don't want Associates I work with to get annoyed by me "nosing" around.

Back to topic...

Google's sentiment is that exchanging links, purchasing links or gaining links from documents with no editorial objective is a form of spam. I think that using press releases, articles and full-page ads are a perfect way to disseminate "content" and build traffic. In fact, that is what I have been doing for a while, and the results of that are showing up daily. In this case I think the key word is "content" --the content has to be relevant and done in a way that it's not broadcast aimlessly throughout the Internet. Again, the information broadcast system that I have worked on will resolve this issue by helping members publish their content and build links.

Another interesting piece of information is that there is a lot of importance put on where the links are coming from. I plan to offer links from maxsimo.org and I think that will be a very powerful linking site because it's an organization and it's several years old. Once again, you'll have to refer to the Information Publishing System in the member area to take advantage of this feature. OR as I have said, if you don't want to wait, just follow the test that I am conducting and send me your content.

Another interesting item from Google is that they pay attention to WHO is linking to you. It matters to them how often the linking site is ranked and how often that site is updated. All of that matters.

Take for example, this site. I am updating this site just about everyday. I think around 300 times a year I'll update it. That was not the case when I started, but again, momentum does not "happen" overnight. The importance of this is that IF I link from here to your own site, then in a matter of days, you'll also get visited by the robots that visit this site. At this moment there are about 2,000 robot visitors to P31.com. I think that number will exceed 10,000 by the end of the summer.

Google will also look at your historical ranking and how it moves up and down. If there is a quick jump, there needs to be a reason like a new search trend. At the same time they will look at how other sites are linking to it. A drop in such links may signal that the content is getting old. Thus the momentum is vital --keep it growing. Keep building. Keep adding content.

A CLOSING THOUGHT:

The reason that I am not exclusively talking about using Google all the time is that Google's reign as the search champ is limited. In my case I started using AltaVista, way back when. Then Google. Now Google is fine when it comes to searching technical things, but MSN, Yahoo or even CNET I use to find products and services. So, Google's reign as the leader is already slowing down --at this time around 40 percent of the searches are done there.

So, it's just a matter of time. In our case, we want to make biig.com the PORTAL for SAVING MONEY. That will take a bit of time, but there's never been a better time to get started than now.

My suggestion when you're doing all of this is to be honest and do your best. That is what I have done in this blog. And you know what, keep "plugging away at doing your best" and sooner or later people fine YOU. {B>)

Ok, my discussion on traffic building is lasting about 10 Episodes... Just keep going to the NEXT DAY...

Carpe Diem, Sam.
