DAY #439: Slowing Down, Just a Bit, to Make Some Breathing Room!

UPDATE:
Sunday, 24-Sep-2006 1:08 PM

For the past year I have been thinking of a "grand travel plan" as a celebration of my 40th birthday coming up. However, after my daughter was born in August, I started to think back at some of the horrors that I have endured trying to do too much during the holiday season.

As I kept thinking... I felt like I was setting myself for another fall (drop, breakdown, etc.)

-- My TEST BLOG --

FEW LESSONS from THE PAST:

During the holiday season in 2004 I broke down of exhaustion after working marathon sessions after the summer move into a new home. There were a lot of tasks left behind by the re-modelers who got about 95% done in the days that they spent working on the house. However, the 5% that was left were the "details" that could not be done by others --unless it was done in a very expensive way. So I worked on it, relishing the idea that a PC guy was better off working on such a task to get me away from the computer. That was time "well spent" but it eventually caught up with me after several months of "projects".

Then last year I did nearly the same and "all hell endured" in December and January with a rented server going down 4 times (mysteriously, on Friday night and most of the day Saturday --at the busiest times of the week in December), having to care for the entire house -- two kids and wife. Our au-pair went home for the holiday's as well. Then in January, I got some mandatory time off courtesy of a physician.

My goal this time around should be *not to repeat* the same events or something similar to it trying to move 3 kids (one just 4 months by then) at a time that is not the best to travel around. I suppose there is a reason why there are a lot of travel bargains in the States between Thanksgiving Day and Christmas -- people are busy enough as it is. Adding more and more complications to it is not going to make things better for me. And if I "break down" for any length of time, there goes everything I've worked for many years. Well, to be exact for 15 years now -professionally. AND personally, for the past 11 years.

Sure I can recover financially. That can always be done. However, personally and with family, that might not be the case. I feel much better taking a short period of time off and staying "put" for the rest of the time and really enjoying the holiday season in a "local" format, preferably, under my own roof! Perhaps, the time saved and the effort that I would have to put-forth are better enjoyed doing much less and being happy about what I have and who I share life with.

I've discussed the travel plans with relatives and now I'll have to "break the latest" decision. However, I am sure they'll understand. I am looked upon as the "energizer bunny" doing everything and all the time. Such a "mindset" makes mistakes in planning and this was such an event.

NOW ON to MY DAY:

Well, another Sunday at the pc, with kids away at the grandparents. I've got to take advantage of such a day and get as many tasks out of the way. The major one being the moving of our primary referral site to a local office server. I am sure that today and Monday will give enough time to do that. Other than that, its work as usual with the network growing and tasks to update the member area moving along.

Back Monday. Carpe Diem, Sam out.

Oh yeah, just an after thought... I suppose the 40th does mean it can last an entire year, and I can spend the rest of the year working on that dream trip, somewhere... I be sure to detail it here in the coming days.
