First of all, let me review what happened: Last fall I got an email from the company in question --BETTERUNIVERSE, which did business from betteruniverse.com. Below is an exert from that email:
E-mail from BetterUniverse on August 7th 2006:
The message is from the President, Steve Gresham...
Presidential Address to all Representatives:
Hello, I wanted to fill you in on the incredible process we are now beginning.
I have told our Reps for the past year that we were working on something, that I couldn't tell them what it was, but all I could say is, "You haven't seen anything yet!"
------End Intro...
The message went on to say the below, which was part of the "important message" from the president...
Back to BetterUniverse Presidential Message:
THIS IS THE BIG BIG NEWS...
It's finally time to let you and all of the other Better Universe Members and Representatives in on the secret.
Right now, we are beginning the transformation into what I have envisioned and worked for Better Universe to become. The process has taken time because the only way we could do it was by producing thousands of Members first. We have done this.
Now, I am pleased to announce that we are launching benefits and marketing focused around the transformation of Better Universe from primarily an opportunity, to a membership with real value and a great opportunity on top!
------------End of a part of the Presidential Message @ BetterUniverse.
What struck me originally about this message is that the president of the company was telling everyone that they have been "marketing an opportunity" all this time. BUT, now that they had enough "members" after a while marketing, they had finally come up with a good product.
I see...
When I looked at BetterUniverse many years ago, the number *did not* add up. To me it looked like the Representatives were paying for a membership that saved them money only when they SOLD the OPPORTUNITY too. The membership in my opinion was WAY TOO HIGH for what it delivered. Why should people PAY TO SAVE MONEY? Anyway, it immediately reminded me of a GAS CARD that claimed to save 20% off of gas. But the membership cost around $199.00. That meant that the customer had to spend around $1,000 on gas to get back the $200 membership price.
Once again, IF the numbers don't add up, then forget it.
Anyway, getting back to BetterUniverse, the marketing hype was there, but that was about it. The email I got ended with the below text. I have saved and archive many emails that threw up red flags.
This update is why I have focused on the product --it's the product, stupid. When the product is good, when the product makes sense, everything flows thru. Everything else makes sense and the business keeps growing.
BetterUniverse Ending Text:
If I could describe it in one sentence, it would be this...
All the long hours and hard work have finally produced the fruit. And now our labors can prove to be financially rewarding as we move into the future together!
YES! We are making a Better Universe.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Steve Gresham
President, Better Universe

My mother said to me, 'If you become a soldier you'll be a general; if you become a monk you'll end up as the pope. Instead, I became a painter and wound up as Picasso.
